Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Akiko began to play piano at the age of 3, surrounded by the pupils of her mother who taught classical piano at home. In her early teenage she started to take a deep interest in improvisational music, fascinated by the music of jazz greats such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Lennie Tristano and Paul Bley, to name a few.
While attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, she decided to take a sabbatical study to attend Berklee College of Music, resulting in choosing her second home in Boston and eventually New York City for the sake of music.
In 2002, Akiko Grace released her debut album “From New York”, on the Savoy label for Columbia Music Entertainment Japan as Savoy's first Japanese artist.
Akiko Grace displayed a deft touch with a driving force in remarkably crystalline piano melodies. “From New York” was selected as “Best Gold Disc of the Month “of Swing Journal Magazine. Akiko Grace’s debut concert in Tokyo was reported as the birth of a new jazz movement in Japan.
Her second album "Manhattan Story" was recorded with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart, and released in September 2002. “Manhattan Story” was selected as Best Gold Disc of the Month, and awarded "New Star of the year "of Swing Journal Disc Award.
In 2003 Akiko formed a special trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jorge Rossy. This performance was chosen as "Best Popular Concert Performance of The Year" of Music Pen Club Japan Award 2002, selected by poll of 200 music critics and writers.
Third album "New York Style”, the last one of “NY Trilogy “works, won "Japan Jazz Grand Prize" of Swing Journal Disc Award, and “Outstanding Record of the Year” from National Arts Festival organized by the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan.
"From Oslo" Akiko’s fourth album was recorded at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, Norway with bassist Larry Grenadier and Oslo-based legendary drummer Jon Christensen, whose impressionistic approach flamed the songs into a special art form.
In 2006 Akiko ventures further into exploring the ambient world, and welcomed Bill Laswell as a producer, bassist and sound creator. Utilizing electric devices, this album “Illume” contains extensive mythical vibes, assured diverse expression, which pushes piano music to new further heights.
In 2008 Akiko’s monumental work "Graceful Vision" was released, recorded with new trio, Larry Grenadier on bass and Ari Hoenig on drums. "Graceful Vision" carries freedom of interpretation and highly artistic vibes to piano trio music where the creative approach is exquisitely exposed.
In January 2009, Akiko’s latest CD, a piano solo album “Pianorium” was released. All of twelve of the songs are original works. This album clearly reflects rich contents of Akiko Grace’s “Mode”.
In April 2009, a 12 inch Analog LP version of “Graceful Vision” was released.

■ 神奈川県生まれ。東京芸術大学音楽学部楽理科とバークリー音楽大学ピアノ演奏科を卒業。在学中より、ボストン・ニューヨークを中心にライブ活動を行う。
■ 2001年SAVOY初の日本人アーティストとして日本コロムビア(現・コロムビアミュージックエンタテインメント)と契約。2002年1月11日ニュー ヨーク録音によるメジャー・デビュー・アルバム『フロム・ニューヨーク』をリリース。2002年1月度スイングジャーナル誌ゴールド・ディスクを受賞。
■ 2002年9月ニューヨーク録音第2弾となるセカンド・アルバム『マンハッタン・ストーリー』を発表。2作連続ゴールド・ディスクを受賞。年間2枚の ゴールド・ディスク獲得は日本ジャズ史上初の快挙。そして、2002年度スイングジャーナル誌ジャズディスク大賞ニュースター賞国内部門には審査委員会満場一致で選出される。
■ ゲイリー・ピーコック(b)、ホルヘ・ロッシィ(ds)とのトリオで行った第一生命ホールでのコンサートが高く評価され、2002年度ミュージック ペンクラブ賞ベストパフォーマンス賞国内部門を受賞。レコードとライブ活動の両面での受賞。
■ 2003年7月、NY3部作完結編となるオリジナル・サード・アルバム『ニューヨーク・スタイル』をリリース。この『ニューヨーク・スタイル』は、第58 回(平成15年度)文化庁主催芸術祭優秀賞(レコード部門)と2003年度スイングジャーナル誌ジャズディスク大賞日本ジャズ賞をダブル受賞。
■ 2004年3月には、初の東京録音による4枚目の「和」をテーマに取り組んだオリジナル・アルバム『Tokyo』を発表。
■ 2004年12月北欧ノルウェーの首都オスロでのRainbow Studio初録音作品『フロム・オスロ』を発表。三度めのゴールド・ディスクを受賞。
■2006年6月、プロデューサーにビル・ラズウェルを迎え、オリジナル曲を中心に収録したピアノソロ作品『Ｉｌｌｕｍｅ』、初のライブ録音作品『Ｍｏｍｅｎｔｕｍ』を２作同時発売。
■2007年７月、毎月１曲、ピアノ曲を作曲し、録音して、発表する「ピアノ・モード」を開始。１２ヶ月の季節感の移り変わりや、心の変化を楽曲で表現していく、創造的ピアノ・ソロ・プロジェクト。
■2008年７月23日、通算１０枚目となる新アルバム『Graceful Vision』発表。ラリーグレナディア（ベース）・アリ・ホニック（ドラムス）による新生ニューヨークトリオによるスタジオ録音。ニューヨークのトリオによる作品はNY３部作以来５年ぶり。
■2009年、初の完全ピアノソロアルバム「ピアノリウム」をリリース。
現在、 ソロ・トリオを中心に活動中。2012年秋、デビュー10周年を記念しベストアルバムのリリース、全国ツアーが予定されている。
